WYCW-TV 62 signed on the air on October 5, 1997 as a WB and UPN affiliate. At that time, it was known as WASV-TV Channel 62 and was owned by Spartan Communications. In 1999, WASV-TV restructured its programming schedule and became a primary UPN affiliate. It was also during this time that WASV-TV was named the 1999-2000 UPN Rookie Affiliate of the Year.
In March 2000, a deal was made between Spartan Communications and Media General, Inc. to buy WASV and its sister station News Channel 7 WSPA, along with 11 other Spartan Communications stations. Media General, Inc. currently owns and operates 30 network-affiliated broadcast television stations and reaches more than 33 percent of all television households in the Southeast and more than 10 percent of those in the United States.
In mid 2006, WASV changed its call letters to WYCW and its affiliation to The CW because “We’re Your CW” for the Carolinas. WYCW-TV is transmitting at 5 million watts, which is the maximum power allowed by the FCC. Our tower is located on Pinnacle Mountain, NC and is 1,823 feet above average terrain, which is the maximum height allowed by the FAA at maximum power.
WYCW-TV has a unique position in the Greenville/Spartanburg market. The station is operated out of the same building with 11 other Media General broadcast stations and it brings the Carolinas a fresh, new alternative to TV watching. WYCW-TV may be licensed in Asheville, but we are dedicated to entertaining everyone in the 28 counties of our coverage area, from Franklin to Mitchell county.
